The North East regional coordinator of Poetry Society (India), Noel Manuel today called upon the various governments to acknowledge and provide the poets a chance towards restoring peace, unity and harmony in the northeast.
Addressing a mammoth gathering as chief guest at the poets’ meet in the 26th Tripura Book Fair 2009 at Agartala, Noel pointed out that poets alone held the key to the future of the Northeast and said, “It has been proved in the past and I would like to reiterate once more that the poets possess the qualities of concern, dedication and passion towards building a vibrant society in any corner of the world.”
Noel went on to add that Tripura has a significant place in the history of poetry in the northeast. “Tripura is the heart of Poetry in the Northeast. The body does not function without the heart. It is this heart that has kept poetry alive and continues to make the subject exist to this day,” Noel said.
Minister for ICAT, Government of Tripura, Anil Sarcar including several noted poets from across the region are participating in the 10 day long poets meet. Later, while addressing the electronic and print media, Noel said that the 3rd Northeast Poetry Festival 2009 will be held in Tripura with sponsorship from the Information, Culture & Tourism (ICAT) department and the Tripura University.
The mission of the Poetry Society (India) is to promote peace, unity and harmony in the North East, acknowledge the contributions of poets and promote poetry in regional languages and dialects besides also encouraging translations to reach a wider readership audience across the globe. The Tripura Book Fair is among the biggest annual events held each year with more than 600 participating publishers and booksellers.
